The Luray Caverns are a geologist's dreamland, filled with majestic stalactites and stalagmites, mirrored pools, flowstone, and other rock formations. Its most famous feature may be the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a series of carefully chiseled stalactites that produce a bell-like noise when hit with solenoid-fired strikers. The Caverns lie about 150 miles up Interstate 81 from Roanoke, just south of downtown.
